Think hiking is only for dogs? Think again! While cats may have a reputation for being independent homebodies, some felines thrive in the great outdoors—especially with the right training and preparation. After camping a few times with Skully, he’s really begun to enjoy our night hikes by the lake!

Whether you’re exploring gentle trails or tackling rugged terrain, here’s how to safely introduce your cat to hiking and make the experience enjoyable for both of you.
1. Is Your Cat Ready for the Trail?
Not all cats are suited for hiking. Before planning an adventure, consider your cat’s:
🐾 Temperament: Confident, curious cats who enjoy exploring will adapt more easily. I’ve heard that starting your cat with leash training while they’re young can help them develop a love for exploring the outdoors! However, this isn’t for everyone. Please don’t drag your parents 19-year-old cat out from under a bed to hike with you! Only bring happy, willing trail companions (which is a good rule for pets and people).
🐾 Leash Training: If your cat isn’t comfortable on a harness, start small with backyard walks before heading to trails. If you’re just introducing them or they’re still getting comfortable, short training sessions are best. The last thing you want is to be stuck in the middle of nowhere with a very upset cat.
🐾 Physical Health: Older cats or those with mobility issues may prefer shorter outings or carrier-assisted hikes. If your cat likes the carrier, let them ride passenger! There’s nothing against a good mobility assisted adventure.
You can always adapt your hike to your cats needs as well! Skully is not a fan of the outdoors during the day but loves a good nighttime stroll. Make sure to keep an eye on them for any shift in comfort or change in body language, so you can best adapt to them.
2. Essential Gear for Hiking with Cats
Proper gear makes all the difference in keeping your feline safe and comfortable:
🎒 Harness & Leash: A secure, well-fitted harness (not a collar) is essential for outdoor excursions. Collars for cats have breakaway safety protection, so attaching a leash to that isn’t going to work. You also don’t want to be strangling your cat! A comfortable harness that fits well is your best bet.

👜 Carrier or Backpack: Even adventurous cats tire quickly—having a carrier lets them rest mid-hike. If this isn’t in the cards for you, make sure to stay close to your car or camp so they can dictate when they’re done.
💧 Food & Water: Hydration is just as important for cats—pack fresh water and a collapsible bowl. Overheating is a very real concern for cats, especially black cats like Skully!
🛑 Portable Litter or Waste Bags: Some cats will hold it until home, but it’s smart to be prepared. When I camp with Skully, we keep a litter box in the tent or car so he can comfortably relieve himself.
☀️ Sun & Bug Protection: Lightweight cooling mats, shade access, and cat-safe flea protection help keep them comfortable. Again, you don’t want them to overheat, so come prepared!
3. Trail Training & Safety Tips
🚶 Start Small: Begin with short walks around familiar outdoor areas before tackling longer hikes.
🌿 Pick Safe Trails: Choose quiet trails without excessive foot traffic, steep drop-offs, or aggressive wildlife.
🧭 Let Your Cat Set the Pace: Don’t rush—allow time for sniffing, climbing, and adjusting.
🛑 Watch for Stress Signals: If your cat seems overwhelmed (crouching, refusing to walk), it’s time for a break or a ride in the carrier.
👀 Never Let Your Cat Roam Off-Leash: Even the best-trained cat can be startled or chase wildlife—always keep them secured.
4. Enjoying the Experience
Hiking with a cat requires patience, but the rewards are incredible. Watching them explore new sights, textures, and smells enriches their environment while strengthening your bond. Some cats may become enthusiastic trailblazers—others may prefer lounging in their backpack, observing from a safe perch. Either way, the key is to respect their comfort level and make it a positive experience.

We hope to see you on the trail, and as always, trailblaze on!
