Trail Etiquette: How to Be a Responsible Adventurer with Your Dog

Exploring the outdoors with your dog is an incredible way to bond while enjoying nature. Trace and I love a good walk in the woods, as it helps me reach my activity goals, and build Trace’s endurance! While hiking is a great bonding exercise for you and your pup, (in addition to a great way to spend the afternoon!) there are a few things you know before you go.

The first and most important thing is learning how to be a resResponsible hiking means ensuring both safety and respect—for your pup, fellow hikers, and the environment. Whether you’re trekking through backcountry trails or taking a relaxed park stroll, these etiquette tips will help make the experience enjoyable for everyone.

1. Know the Rules Before You Go

Not all trails allow dogs, and even dog-friendly paths often have specific regulations. Check local guidelines to ensure your pup is welcome and understand leash laws before heading out.

I know some of you are thinking “but my dog is so well behaved! And he loves hiking! Why would anyone not allow dogs on the trail?”

I know you love dogs on the trail. Frankly I do too! But wildlife and conservation comes first. The absolute last thing you want if for your dog to run up on a bear. Even if you don’t live in an area with large predators, I’m sure that there are some smaller critters near you! We don’t want to disturb these guys in their natural habitat or disrupt native plant life.

Please be respectful, and find trails that work for you!

2. Leash Laws & Off-Leash Considerations

🐾 Leashed Trails: Keep your dog close and under control, especially in high-traffic areas.

🐾 Off-Leash Trails: If permitted, ensure your pup has strong recall and stays within sight at all times. Personally, I never do off leash time with Trace in public, unless we are in a dog park or dedicated off leash facility. Even though Trace has excellent recall, if another dog comes up on the trail, I like to have him close by. I would recommend this for all dog owners, but it’s truly your choice. Just make sure you’re up to date with local guidelines.

Leash rules help protect wildlife and prevent unexpected encounters. Once again, we don’t want our fur babies running into bears. So check twice before you head out!

3. Yield to Others on the Trail

🚶 Step aside and allow space for other hikers to pass.

🐕 Keep your dog calm and avoid interactions unless welcomed.

🏇 If encountering horses, step off the trail and keep your dog quiet to prevent startling them.

4. Pack Out What You Pack In

Dog waste is a major environmental issue on trails. ✔ Carry biodegradable poop bags and dispose of waste properly. ✔ Never leave bags behind—if there’s no disposal site, pack them out. ✔ In remote areas, consider burying waste away from water sources following Leave No Trace principles.

5. Protect Wildlife & Preserve Nature

🚫 Prevent your pup from chasing wildlife or disturbing fragile ecosystems. 💧 Ensure your dog doesn’t drink from unknown water sources, as they may contain harmful bacteria or parasites.

By following proper trail etiquette, you ensure a safe and respectful outdoor experience for all adventurers—two-legged and four-legged alike!

Trailblaze on!
