Last week, we went to lake Watauga for a beach day! It was so fun that I decided to highlight it in a post. We took the kayaks and had so much fun exploring the area.

Lake Watauga is a breathtaking retreat known for its crystal-clear waters, scenic hiking trails, and abundant wildlife. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful getaway or an adrenaline-filled adventure, this lake offers something for everyone
Why Lake Watauga Stands Out
Often recognized as one of the cleanest lakes in the country, Lake Watauga boasts over 1,000 acres of pristine water, surrounded by rolling hills and dense forests. The lake’s tranquil beauty is especially stunning in the fall, when vibrant foliage creates a picturesque backdrop. Seriously look at those mountains!
Outdoor Adventures at Lake Watauga

🌊 Boating & Fishing: With several public access points and marinas, visitors can rent boats or cast a line for bass, trout, and crappie. We had a ton of fun exploring the lake on our kayaks with Trace.
🚶 Hiking Trails: The surrounding area features miles of scenic trails, including routes that connect to the Appalachian Trail.
🏕️ Camping: Whether you prefer tent sites or modern cabins, camping by the lake lets you fully immerse yourself in nature. I’ve camped here multiple times now, and every time has been a blast!
🐾 Wildlife Viewing: Keep an eye out for deer, bald eagles, and even the occasional black bear in the surrounding forests.
Local Charm & Nearby Attractions
Beyond the lake, nearby towns like Elizabethton offer charming eateries, antique shops, and local markets featuring handmade goods. For history buffs, Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park provides insight into Tennessee’s rich past. It’s also not too far from tons of local hikes and is only a short drive to Johnson City.
Lake Watauga is more than just a scenic destination—it’s a place to disconnect, explore, and recharge. Whether you’re paddling across its glassy waters, hiking through the surrounding wilderness, or simply enjoying a quiet day at the lake, this Tennessee treasure is worth the visit.
