Tripawed Training Tips: Diet and Exercise

With a Tripawed pup, diet and exercise can make the difference between an adventure dog and a couch potato! But that’s true of everyone isn’t it? Fortunately, in the few months Trace has been part of the family, I’ve found a routine that works for us! Here’s a few tips and tricks to help you get the hang of healthy routines with your Tripawed baby.

Diet

Keeping your Tripawed pup at the right weight is super important! If they gain too much weight, they could have joint issues with their remaining leg. If they end up too far underweight, they could lack the strength to walk! Being a doggy pogo stick is a difficult task! Fortunately, most dog foods come with feeding guidelines for your dog’s ideal weight.

Breakfast

I like to keep breakfast simple with Trace! I try to feed him about a half hour after I get up. This way, he knows that I have to get ready before getting him breakfast, and he’s less likely to wake me up to get food sooner! This helps both of us develop a routine together and get our rest. I feed Skully around the same time, just in separate locations.

At breakfast time, both boys get dry food. I follow the directions on their respective food bags, that way they’re getting all their nutritional needs met! From there, they can scarf down their food.

Dinner

Dinner is a bit more special for them! I keep dinner at roughly the same time every night (within about an hour) so they know when to expect it. I also time this with our evening walk, so that Traces last chance to use the bathroom is around a half hour after his dinner.

At dinner time, the boys get something a little more special. Skully gets wet food, and Trace gets a combination meal of dry food, coconut oil, and chicken broth. This way, both boys have a special treat, and still get all their nutritional needs met.

Treats

I really only use treats when training with Trace. He gets treats when he goes into his kennel when I leave the house, in addition to our training sessions. During our training sessions, he gets one treat per trick. In the kennel, he gets a higher value treat because of his distaste for kennel time.

Exercise

Here’s where it gets exciting! Exercise is a super vital part to your dog’s health, Tripawed or not! On average, dogs need at least one hour of activity a day, depending on size and breed.

Fortunately there are lots of benefits from exercising with your pup. Dogs who have had the proper activity level are better behaved! Without all that excess energy, your fur baby is going to be easier to train and less likely to act up.

Additionally, with exercise, your pup builds stamina and strength! If you’re raising a Tripawed pup, stamina is everything. The longer they can walk, the stronger their remaining legs get, and the more likely their have less joint issues in later life. Moreover, with more activity the less likely they are to be overweight and the more likely they are to be healthy!

And, the more strength they have, the more they’re going to able to adventure with you! The more they build up that shoulder or hip muscle, the more they are going to be able to achieve. Thanks to his resilience and strength, Trace can load himself up into the car, balance on a paddle board, and so much more!

With proper diet and exercise, your fur baby can grow and adventure with you!

Trailblaze on!
