I’ve heard a lot of different opinions of whether or not dogs should be allowed off leash in certain spaces. Whether you think it’s right or wrong, here’s a brief adventure guide on if your dog should be off leash or not.
Parks
If you’re in a public park with your pup, most leash laws require your dog to be on a leash. I’d play it safe and keep fido on a leash. Even if leash laws don’t regulate this particular park, I’d recommend keeping your dog on a leash. Parks can be filled with all kinds of people and animals who may not love being approached by an unrestrained pooch.

Dog Parks
Dog parks are an entirely different story! If the park is fenced in, and doesn’t have any rules about leashes, you can assume it’s safe to let your pup run free! I love doing this with Tre; it lets him get all his energy out while I relax!
Hiking
Usually when hiking I would er on the side of caution and keep my pup on a leash. Regardless of if the trail is public or private, there can be other people and animals on the trail. Lots of people may not love a surprise pup visit. And if someone is hiking with their reactive dog or a cat, it could go sideways fast!
Even if you’re not worried about other people, all kinds of animals can be on the trial. No one wants fido nose to nose with a bear.

Camping
For camping I would also recommend leashing your dog. Most camp sites are public spaces shared by all, and your pup could get into trouble. Additionally, most camp sites have leash laws as well.

Indoors, but in public
Definitely leash your pet! Some businesses may allow unleashed dogs, but I wouldn’t risk it. I think a safe bet is if you’re in a public space, your pet should be leashed.
Swimming
Swimming is the same way! If it’s a public space, your pup should be leashed. However, even if it isn’t, it’s a lot easier to pull your pup out of the water in an emergency if they have a leash! Make sure that your pet is in a life jacket if needed (some dogs need them, some don’t) and not leashed around their neck. This can make it hard for them to breathe while swimming, which gets tricky in a hurry.

Outdoors at Home
This one is up to you! If you’re on private property, it’s the owner’s decision! However, if you feel like your pup’s recall isn’t perfect, you may want to consider leashing them until they learn to return on command. It’s a lot harder for a dog to get into trouble if they’re attached to you!

A great rule of thumb is if you’re in public with a pet, keep them restrained! If in private, it’s entirely up to you!
Knowing when to leash your pup is an essential step to including your pet on all your adventures!
